The weather in San Antonio is subtropical, with hot, humid summers. July is the hottest month, while January is the coldest. The average low temperature in January is only 41 degrees Fahrenheit, making the winter months comparatively mild. The mildest months are April, October, and November when temperatures are not below freezing. The city receives about 33 inches of rain annually.
In the early 1900s, San Antonio was Texas’s largest city, with a population of 96,614 residents. This was largely due to increased Mexican immigration and the development of the city’s service industry. In 1913, the Spanish-language newspaper, La Prensa, was launched in the city. By 1914, it had become a daily publication and a major source of news for local businesses. The newspaper also featured announcements from Mexican American organizations and covered Mexican politics.
If you’re in the mood for a bit of history, you can visit the Alamo Mission, a historic structure where a small group of Texans held out against a large Mexican army. In the end, the Alamo became the symbol of freedom for Texans, and the phrase “Remember the Alamo” became a battle cry. Today, the Alamo complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Monument.
One of the most popular neighborhoods in San Antonio is the River Walk. Nearby, the city is home to the world’s largest river. In addition to the River Walk, the city also boasts a variety of museums and attractions. It features the La Villita Mexican American cultural center, the Buckhorn Saloon, the San Antonio Botanical Garden, and a large number of military museums. In recent years, the River Walk has undergone two major extensions. One, the Museum Reach, stretches to the Pearl District, and the other, the Mission Reach, goes eight miles to the San Antonio Missions. In 2014, the Tobin Center for Performing Arts opened on the River Walk, a major cultural center for the city.
The city also enjoys a thriving food scene and affordable living costs compared to other major cities in Texas. The average cost of living in San Antonio is 14% lower than the national average.
